What exactly does “personal branding” mean? If you googled it, then you will probably come up with the Wikipedia definition which says, “personal branding is the conscious and intentional effort to create and influence public perception of an individual by positioning them as an authority in their industry, elevating their credibility, and differentiating them from the competition, to ultimately advance their career, increase their circle of influence, and have a larger impact.”
So, to paraphrase and break it into simple English, personal branding simply means “how you promote yourself. It is a combination of your skills, experience, and the personality that you want the world to see.”
An example of a powerful personal brand that comes to mind is Elon Musk. Earlier this month, CNN reported that the value of Bitcoin nosedived by 12% after Elon Musk tweeted that Tesla would not accept the cryptocurrency as payment for its electric vehicles. This is just an example of how powerful a personal brand can be.
This explains why a lot of corporate organizations spend a huge part of their budget on building their brand. As an individual, you can also build your own personal brand that personify the values you stand for.
In today’s world, getting ahead requires more than hard work. Recruiters, employers and even colleges are looking out for candidates that stand out. They are searching for individuals who not only work hard but go out of their way to make a mark on the environment around them.
At Stephanie John and Associates, we help you identify and create your personal brand. How do we do this? There is a strategy involved in building a personal brand, but this strategy can be broadly classified under these three pillars.
Defining your “Who, Why and How”: Here we help you in defining who you are, your history, passion, and interests. We also examine what you have to offer and help you identify what you stand for in a way that will help you stand out.
Defining your Why: We try to understand why you do what you do and basically what drives you. Your passion, your focus and if it resonates with how people see you. For example, you cannot claim to be passionate about the environment, and yet you are seen driving an expensive fuel guzzling vehicle. There must be a synergy between your personal brand and how you live your life.
Defining your How: It is all about focusing on how we will communicate your message in a way that connects with your target audience to change their perception and control the narrative around your personal brand. We will amplify your stories and the essence of your brand by leveraging platforms that connect with your TA and is consistent with the image of your brand.
